Fundamental Principles of Neural Organization of Cognition
نویسنده
چکیده
The manuscript advances a hypothesis that there are few fundamental principles of neural organization of cognition, which explain several wide areas of the cognitive functioning. We summarize the fundamental principles, experimental, theoretical, and modeling evidence for these principles, relate them to hypothetical neural mechanisms, and made a number of predictions. We consider cognitive functioning including concepts, emotions, drives-instincts, learning, “higher” cognitive functions of language, interaction of language and cognition, role of emotions in this interaction, the beautiful, sublime, and music. Among mechanisms of behavior we concentrate on internal actions in the brain, learning and decision making. A number of predictions are made, some of which have been previously formulated and experimentally confirmed, a number of new predictions are made that can be experimentally tested. Is it possible to explain a significant part of workings of the mind from few basic principles, similar to how Newton explained motions of planets? This manuscript summarizes a part of contemporary knowledge toward this goal.

Organization, development and function of complex brain networks.
Recent research has revealed general principles in the structural and functional organization of complex networks which are shared by various natural, social and technological systems. This review examines these principles as applied to the organization, development and function of complex brain networks. Specifically, we examine the structural properties of large-scale anatomical and functiona...

متن کاملSpatial Learning and Action Planning in a Prefrontal Cortical Network Model
The interplay between hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC) is fundamental to spatial cognition. Complementing hippocampal place coding, prefrontal representations provide more abstract and hierarchically organized memories suitable for decision making. We model a prefrontal network mediating distributed information processing for spatial learning and action planning. Specific connectivity an...

The perception of dynamic spatio-temporal patterns, the perception of motion, is a fundamental part of visual cognition. In order to understand the principles behind these biological processes better, we analyze and construct a representation of dynamic spatio-temporal information on different levels of abstraction. Psychophysical experiments have shown that a spatio-temporal memory for early v...
متن کاملOperational principles of neurocognitive networks.
Large-scale neural networks are thought to be an essential substrate for the implementation of cognitive function by the brain. If so, then a thorough understanding of cognition is not possible without knowledge of how the large-scale neural networks of cognition (neurocognitive networks) operate. Of necessity, such understanding requires insight into structural, functional, and dynamical aspec...
